Crime Statistics
According to data received from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting division, Cumberland County recorded 5,116 offenses in 2017. Larceny-theft was the most common property crime with 3,898 cases, while aggravated-assault was the most common violent crime. Compared to the previous year, the annual crime rate per 1000 slipped from 19.33 to 17.36. The county recorded a drop in incidences of murder, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, arson, and larceny.
Criminal Records
In compliance with the Maine Freedom of Access Act, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office provides public access to criminal records and reports, including vehicle crash reports and incident reports. Members of the public can obtain records by submitting a request to the:

The department charges $12.00 for the first seven pages of an incident/accident report and $1.00 for each additional page. Media requests (audio, DVD, etc) cost $25.00 each.
Requests for more extensive criminal records should be directed to the Maine State Bureau of Identification. It offers two types of criminal history record checks: name-based checks and fingerprint checks. Requests can be made in person at 45 Commerce Drive, Suite 1, Augusta. The office opens between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from Monday through Friday. Members of the public can also obtain requests via mail by sending an application to:

Who Can Request a Report?
In compliance with state laws, access to some incident reports and other police reports may be restricted to only authorized applicants. Requests can be made by witnesses or victims of a crime, insurance carriers, or legal representatives of victims.
How to Find Sex Offender Information
The Maine State Police serves as a central repository for sex offender information. It maintains records of sex offenders residing in Cumberland County or other parts of the states. The department also provides public access to sex offender information via an online registry. Interested parties can search for offenders by name (first and last), city or by specifying a zip code or address range.
How to Find Jail/Inmate Records
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office maintains an online roster of persons held in county jail. It provides general information such as the inmate’s name and date of birth. The roster also provides the inmate’s booking date and projected release date as well as the location of the facility where the inmate is housed.

Vital Records
Vital Records in Cumberland County are processed at the state level. This includes birth certificates, death certificates, and records of domestic partnerships. Applicants may be restricted from obtaining certified records depending on their eligibility. In compliance with state laws, access to public vital records is restricted to only death records 25 years or older, marriage records 50 years or older, and birth records 75 years or older.
How to Find Divorce Records
Interested parties can obtain certified copies of a divorce decree by contacting the clerk of courts where the divorce was granted. In addition, the Maine Vital Records Office maintains records of divorces from 1892 to date. Certified copies of divorce record can be obtained by submitting a request to any of these locations:

Requesters will be expected to provide proof of relationship to the individual on record as well as a legitimate interest for the record. Requests must also include the date of the divorce, names of the parties listed on the divorce, city where the divorce occurred and contact number. In addition, interested parties must submit a copy of a valid government-issued ID (such as a passport or driver’s license) as well as check for the appropriate fee.
How to Obtain Birth, Death, or Marriage Records
The Maine CDC Vital Records office processes requests for birth and death records. To submit requests for a record, interested parties must provide the name on the birth record, the date of birth, city/town where the birth occurred and the name of parents. For marriage records, requesters must provide the name of the bride and groom as well as the date and location of the marriage. Applications must also indicate the requester’s relationship to the individual on record and include a check payable to the “Treasurer. The state of Maine.” Requests should be sent along with a self-address stamped envelope and payment to:

The office charges $15 for the first certified copy of a vital record and $6.00 for each additional copy made during the same request. Requesters will also be expected to provide an I.D proving their identity. Accepted options include government-issued I.Ds such as a social security card, passport, driver’s license or state photo ID.
